iridescent vase with gilt mark, help please.
« on: November 19, 2008, 02:32:46 PM »
Hi there
This vase has a metallic glaze that makes it look like glass, it has a sort of gold D ? mark on the base that I am unable to identify. I don't know if it dates from around 1900, as the style suggests, not English I should imagine, maybe French ?? If it was glass not pottery it would be from Bohemia probably, maybe someone has seen something like this, or the gold mark on the base, best wishes

I suspect, although I haven't confirmed it that these gold-trimmed iridescent vases, are English and date from the 1950s/1960s/1970s. Mine came from my friend's mother and I suspect she bought or was given it new. There are several shape variants and at least three colours (blue, pink and cream). They seem to have different letters, mine has a J, but they are probably just gilders' marks. The gilding seems a different shade to that found on Continental wares, less brassy. If it's English, it probably came from Johnson Matthey, the main UK gilding supplier. I've always felt these were quite Sadlerish, perhaps they were a line for somewhere like Woolworths? Woolworths certainly commissioned glassware.

I will post a picture later

Hi
Thanks for reply. I wouldn't be at all surprised if that was right - I thought the piece wasn't as old as the style, although the wear on the gilding tells me it wasn't made yesterday - look forward to seeing the picture.

Mine is actually marked England and has an inscribed J and a glided K maker's mark. Do you think it is from the same stable as yours? Gilding doesn't wear well, particularly with dusting and washing

Dear Christine
How interesting ! I have just had a look at Sadler ware, which I'd not heard of, but that seemed to be marked Sadler, naturally enough ! Now I see your vase, I would say not  the same stable, the gilders mark certainly, but  the body of mine is ribbed , and the glaze doesn't look the same, it doesn't look as modern. I saw recently a big vase in iridescent glaze that was obviously modern, maybe 1970's, and the glaze on your vase reminds me more of that. Perhaps my vase came in the 50's or something !!!!!
Best wishes Gem
