ID for these German porcelain marks please?
« on: January 16, 2009, 12:03:16 PM »
Can anyone help me with an ID for these marks please? I'm pretty sure that they are German/Bavarian. As well as the printed blue shield and crown mark, there is an impressed shield with a star above it. The marks are actually slightly blurred ~ it's not my bad photography!! One of the items also has a small hand painted leaf on the bottom.

Thanks in anticipation, John.

Hi John, I've looked through the Miller's Pottery Marks book (by Gordon Lang) but can't see your marks. However, there is on page 210 (if you have access to a copy) a comment about Nymphenburg, Bavaria, which says, " Modern wares.... can be marked with both an impressed and an underglaze blue printed mark."

Armed with that I googled Nymphenburg and found they still exist, with a website which has a history section and a marks page (wish they all had!  8)) - there is one which appears similar to yours but it's hard to be sure because of the blurring. Take a look and see what you think: http://www.nymphenburg.com/en/nymphenburg/history/press-marks.html - it may also be worth emailing them with a photo of the piece and the marks and asking if it's one of theirs.
Cheers!

The impressed mark with the star above the shield is in Porcelain Marks Of The World by Emanuel Poche, dating to 1850-1862. This is an old book so the stamp 'may' have been re-used later on.

Hi TC, and thanks for the info.

I also posted these marks on the eBay Forum and someone there told me that they:

"are shown as Mark 680 in Rontgen's book and cited as the Royal Porcelain Manufactory, Nymphenburg, Bavaria, Germany, circa 1890-1895. The impressed marks of the star above the shield are also shown as Mark 606 in the Rontgen book and cited as being the Royal Factory Manufacture, Nymphenburg, ca 1850-1862."

which ties up nicely with what you tell me. Unfortunately, there's no overlap of the two sets of dates ~ maybe the blanks were made between 1850-1862, stored until 1890 and decorated then? As well as the shield and star, they are impressed with '50', maybe indicating 1850?

Will try one on eBay tomorrow, and see how it goes.

Thanks again for your help ~ very much appreciated as always.

Cheers, John.
