Personal Record by a BUCK PRIVATE
« on: October 03, 2009, 07:44:28 AM »
Found this record, and thought I would buy it for .50 cents.  It only has a recording (and the grooves) on one side.  I do have a record player here and did listen to it.  It is a bit scratchy but from what I could make out it sounds like it is a Canadian BUCK PRIVATE sending a message to relatives (or friends in Portage, Manitoba).  Talks about the big bands in NY, and mentions that he got a raise as a BUCK PRIVATE.   Also says he decided to go to a recording studio to send a message back home.....

I am assuming that this must be from (??) World Was II, and must have a bit of value on it.  The lady I bought it from never knew nothing about it when I bought it, and this was before I had listened to it.  I bought because it looked different, and I noticed that only the one side had grooves on it, like only one side was a (paid) recording.....

Also it has the center hole, of course, but then there is another hole off to the side....Not sure why this is there, or if this was done because it was a home (personal) recording.

Any input on this....

I have been hunting around here on the net, but have not found much yet....

 :)

Just never know what ONE may FIND.......

.....as I will add this pic.  This was the cover on it, BUT most likely NOT the original cover for it.........but then......you never know.  Maybe this was a division of the Record label.

.....and maybe not, as we all know covers for LP got mixed up over time...so NOT sure.

Oh yes, forgot to mention this.....THE record played on 78 rpm

Hi Rose,

I've got one of these records which I recorded of myself reciting a speech from Shakespeare  ;D  8:)

You used to be able to go into a booth, put money in a slot ( I seem to remember it was quite a lot of money - well, it seemed a lot to me as I was only about 12 or 13!) and say whatever you wanted and a record would be 'cut' in a few minutes.  There was a machine in the foyer of Madame Tussauds in London - I'm talking about the 1960's here.   I would assume there would be similar machines in other places at the same time, but I don't know for how long before or after the '60's they were around.

Didn't they have them in Woolworths too? Or am I imagining it?

There's a great page about home versions here:
http://www.madinpursuit.com/CosmoProductions/KathleenMachine/Turntable02.html. There's a mention of the RecorDisc Copr at the foot of the page too.

I don't ever recall seeing these anywhere when I was small - maybe they were only in bigger stores?
Cheers!

THANKS ANNE......Getting somewhere on this.  :kissy:

QUOTE FROM THE ABOVE LINK:  The Recordisc Corp, 395 Broadway, New York City "Instantaneous Recording Blanks. Type N1, 1941. Slow Burning" and "Type Professional, copyright 1942." Can be recorded inside out or outside in.

I do not recall seeing anything like that here when I was little either.  The guy on it definitely says he is a BUCK PRIVATE, and something like he got a raise in his pay of .25 cents per day.  I am going to record the LP with the digital camera here -- and was thinking about (maybe) putting it on You Tube for the heck of it.  So with that kinda $$$ pay, I would think a .25 cents in pay (in something like 1942) was a lot......after all, why mention it in the record if it was not a big thing.

I wonder if that is what mine says (Instantaneous Recording Blanks) too, under the word RECORD on the disc?  I will have to take a closer look at it.....REAL CLOSE

Super INFO !!!
