50s retro dishes with pigskin backing
« on: April 14, 2009, 08:36:22 PM »
Just thought I'd show these very 1950s look shallow dishes with stylised figures.  The interesting thing about them is that they are backed with genuine pigskin.  I've only ever seen glass backed with pigskin.  This was covered on the GMB - i.e. Seetusee Glassware by Mayfair, Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, Canada, who operated in the 1960s.  I actually have a piece of their glass with the remains of the label (well my daughter does, as she nabbed it).  Their work was said to be inspired by Mexican paintings on glass.

So, back to my little three pigskin backed ceramics.  One has a label "Pelma", but googling brings nothing up, probably because they are so old.  Pelma may have been just a trade name.  I'm guessing that they might be Italian.  Just something about the shape of the dishes and the style of decoration.  What does anyone think?  Does anyone know of any ceramic companies who used pigskin backing?

Anne, like you I've never seen pigskin ceramics, just the pigskin glass.  I'm wondering if they might be of African origin, given the subject matter?
Cheers!

Early San Marino was often backed in pig skin

Oh that's useful to know, thank you. I googled San Marino pottery and found this site which looks worth a visit - lots of similar styled pieces in their gallery. Maybe a note to them with pics might bring a yes or no...? http://italy119.wordpress.com/
Cheers!
