Adderleys England Date or anything...
« on: August 05, 2007, 11:33:25 AM »
Hi guys,

I recently got this cup and saucer set. Its not in super great condition but I think its quite old. Anyway, Ive been trying to date it by the backstamp. Looking for Adderley but then I realised it said Adderleys. Its confusing as most of the sites I found say that it should say Adderleys Ltd but it doesnt. And as for ideas on the pattern...nada...so HELP :)

http://www.thepotteries.org/allpotters/8a.htm

Adderleys Ltd
Longton
1906- ? (1990's?)

It says at the bottom, the mark was also used by William Alsager Adderleys.

Still don't know the date though, I suppose if they don't know...

The mark is curious, it has three words underneath Adderleys. I first thought that it said: "MADE IN ENGLAND", but on closer inspection it looks like it says: "MADE BY ? ? ? ? ? ?".

I wonder if Adderleys is a pattern name instead. Why put Adderleys and then put "MADE BY..."? Unless it is the name of the designer or something.

I think it does say "MADE IN ENGLAND", I should have gone to Specsavers.

Yep, it does say Made In England. I just realised the cup only says S Made In England. Looks like the Adderley has worn off the cup.

Thats what I meant about confused, none of the backstamp websites say that it should say that. No Ltd and no Longton.

I want to list it but I hate putting something on when Im not sure of the date or anything. If its old enough it may get away with not being in pristine condition Im hoping.

Hi Trudy
Just had a look at Godden,s book of marks and the mark on your piece is not in it not sure of a date but late 40s early 50s would be my guess

Adderleys were taken over by Ridgway Potteries Ltd in 1947 but contiued to use a mark of there own the last mark in Godden is for 1962.

Thanks Tony...I'll have a look at 40's dates too and see if I can match up the pattern. These books sound good :)
