What's this for??
« on: January 24, 2008, 07:40:16 AM »
Hi potties,
Found this in the attic in our summerhouse. It's probably the least attractive thing I've ever seen..28 cms long, 15 wide and weighs around 3 kilos. Signed Jeanette. Never mind all that, what is it FOR?
You can't put candles in it,
I've got it into my head you can't put water into it as the bottom is unglazed ( is that assumption correct? ) so flowers are out
It's not for feeding the birds,
I'm baffled :sign_help:
If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Forgot about the chain  :sign_oops: Yup, and it's thick enough to restrain a very large dog!

Wasp trap perhaps? Put some sugared water into it and let the wasps crawl in and drown. Chain to hang it in a handy tree...
Cheers!

definitely a possibility, hate the wee beasties! but wouldn't the water ooze out, when the bottom is unglazed? (Showing what an ignoramus re. pottery I truly am ;) )

I suppose it would not be watertight, in the same way as clay flowerpots aren't, so it would stop it getting waterlogged. Perhaps being unglazed helps the sugar smell permeate out as an attractant?
Cheers!

West German pottery, don't let the others hear you.  :taped:  Is it unglazed on the outside bottom or the inside bottom?

This is what happens when you allow "persons of other persuasions than pottery" ask questions on the board  ;D
Ahem, back to the subject.. it is unglazed on both bottoms.

Plants I reckon, they won't get waterlogged. A bit of dangly lobelia would look quite nice

Thanks! Hadn't thought of filling it with potting whatsit and putting trailing plants in it.. that would explain the very thick chain.
