* SUDLOW'S BURSLEM (??)
« on: August 21, 2007, 09:47:31 PM »
Hi  :)  I have just a creamer, that says on it "SUDLOW'S BURSLEM-MADE IN ENGLAND" in like an gold oval.  Just above this oval, it appears to be handpainted in gold the number 01236p (I think).  The creamer is a yellow and gold ( ?? 22 kt maybe ) vertical bands that shape with the body.  It looks real old.  Does anyone know of this? Age? Is it hand-painted? What does the hand painted number on the bottom mean?  It looks like a small letter "p" at the end of the number.  Any information on it? Value ?  I have not taken a pix of it yet.  If needed, will try to do, but it appears my pics are too  :-\  big....Thanks for any response

http://www.thepotteries.org/allpotters/971.htm tells us that R Sudlow, Earthenware Manufacturer, Adelaide Pottery, Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent were in existence from 1886 - 1965. Replacements.com have some Sudlow's patterns listed here http://www.replacements.com/china/SUOIMG01.htm but none look like your description. If you could post pics that would be great. (Send them via email to me or Pip if you can't resize them to fit the board.)
Cheers!

All I know about Sudlow's is that they were in operation between 1886-1965. For it to say Made in England, dates it to post 1890, but without a picture, I can't add much more, sorry.

Oops, too late.  ::)

Wow,thanks already.  I will take a pix now, but I have to wait for my son to put on computor.  Do you mean before, or after 1890 that it is from.  I bought it at a garage sale for .50 cents.  The gold color is strong color, heavy...has some wear.  Will try to get pix up, when everyone else is sleeping around the world.

I am impressed  :clap: with such quick, fast knowledge.  Do you know the value?  I think there probably was a sugar bowl with it, but, alas, that was not at the garage sale, or else it was in another box, and purchased by someone else  :'(

P.S. What do the hand-painted numbers on the bottom in gold, mean?  The intial?  These stuff is outside oval.  When I went to 'THE POTTERY PAGE" posted here, the example there was different.  Mine just says:

                                           SUDLOW'S
                                            BURSLAM
                                      MADE IN ENGLAND

After 1890.......all to do with "England" having to be written because of the Mckinley Tariff Act. And, I have to correct myself, "Made in England" was made compulsory in 1921, although some potteries used the wording earlier :-[

The hand-painted numbers are generally painted in the last colour that was used on the piece. They sometimes represent the pattern number (with and without letters) but may refer to something completely different.

Sometimes you get a "pattern number" and a separate painter's mark.

Burslam is correctly spelt Burslem (although it appears to be commonly mispelt) and forms part of Stoke-on-Trent (the Potteries), see http://www.thepotteries.org/six_towns/burslem.htm
