Hi Sue,

Hema is a Household Goods shop, here in Holland. Good quality items, at not too expensive prices. Jip en Janneke are really big with the kids over here too, especially the books, which Fiep was the illustrator for.
De Hema first introduced Fiep's work into their stores in 1975 and then re-introduced in 1991. The original illustrations, in books, date back to the mid 1950's.
Unfortunately, she passed away on February 5 2004, aged 87.

Hi Della, how can you tell the earlier pieces from the new?

I am not sure, yet  ;D but I will see what I can find out for you, Sue. Maybe a picture of the backstamp would help, then I can compare it to those that are available over here, some of which the sellers give a date to.

Hi Sue,
Because it says that it is suitable for use in the microwave, I would date it to the second series, 1991. I know that microwave ovens were around in the mid-late 70's but I don't think that they would have been that popular that it would be written on plates for everyday use (or maybe I'm wrong).

yes you're right Della - dishwasher proof can be early (dishwashers have been around for yonks) but anything that says microwave proof must be reasonably recent - as you say within the past 15 to 20 years.

Just a note...we had a big microwave ( not like the small ones today) when my dad was still alive.  He bought it for my Mom as a gift.  We were one of the first (in the area) to have a micowave in those early day....so that was in the *early* 70's, and like it costed over $1200 in those days....which was a lot to spend then.....

I remember coming home from school and making a hot dog in a few seconds...so here in Canada, they have been around for about 1972......so that is 35 years...Dad bought it for Mom, and he was not sick yet...and he was sick for a couple years before he died....so 1972 to 1974....so 32 to 35 years around  ((( WOW ))).  This I am certain for this in my life dating of this item ;)

Just thought I would mention this, as it doesn't seem that long ago.......but then times flies.... :o :o

In 1977, when I got married for the first time, my MiL gave us her old microwave as she'd got another one. It too was a huge thing but I didn't replace it till 1990. So I think they've been around longer than we think.  :hj: yeh I know

Fair enough, but they weren't a household commodity until well into the late 70's, early 80's, even then only for the wealthy. So I can't believe that they would add "Microwave oven safe" on the back of a plate that was designed to get customers into a store, which is comparible to Woolworths, back in 1975.  :-\

I don't doubt you're right Della, just reiterating that microwaves have been round longer than we think and BTW ex-MiL wasn't/isn't rich just ordinary working class

I am not worried about being wrong, Christine
Just sort of thinking out loud really (I shouldn't even think, really, let alone out loud, it makes too much noise  :czy:  :24: )
