Szeiler Pottery
« on: August 14, 2007, 01:51:37 PM »
I've two pieces of this and they are so different... one is a small oval posy vase (the sort of thing I always think of as inexpensive gift/tourist ware) and the other is a pair of snuggling bunnies.  Both are marked but with different versions of the mark.

Joseph Szeiler was apparently a Hungarian who came to England in 1948, intending to become a coal miner, but that wasn't to be, and he began working in the pottery industry for Meakin's, before moving to Goldscheider Pottery, and then onto Wade Heath, and finally Richards Tiles, before starting his own Studio Szeiler.  Joseph specialised in animals, but also made money boxes, vases & dishes, and those jolly kitchen storage pots looking like a pig's head, etc...  In 1987, the year after Joseph's death, his factory was sold and is now Moorland Pottery.

There is website about Szeiler Pottery, which is still being put together, but they already have some info online... http://www.szeilerpages.justbrowsing.com/ in case anyone wants to know more.  (Added to Links also.)
Cheers!

The only Szeiler I've had is a Thelwell piggy bank but that was years ago. Szeiler seems to be difficult to come by around here.

Szeiler values (particularly on ebay) are a bit depressed at the moment, so it is a good time to buy.  There is an excellent Szeiler site with all the model numbers and backstamps here

Oooohhhh Lynne, that lamp is lovely! but I'm going to have to pass on it... my pottery and glass budget is zero until I get the kitchen finished sadly. :(  My Mum bought me the bunnies at the top of this topic last year, and I think they're so cute. :)
Cheers!

I have quite a collection of Szeiler cats, mainly (but not exclusively) painted in Siamese colours, which are amongst the collection I inherited from my great-aunt.  I was very pleased to see many of them on the site link given.  Thank you, Anne & Lynne.  You can see a few of them here, but I really must make an effort to photograph them properly!
