Picasso Vallauris Jug
« on: August 03, 2007, 07:23:40 PM »
The nicest glaze I ever saw was on a Picasso Vallauris jug using an oxidised paraffin glaze (apparently - don't ask me! ).  I have no idea how this was developed but the result was delicious.

The jug is in my glass gallery here:

Ah yes, it was a nice one.... I like ones like that....;D

I did try on another one at a different auction house earlier this year but missed on it.  Ah well, some you win, some you don't.

That's paraffin wax I assume, the design would have been painted on in the wax then the white glaze over the top, in the kiln the glaze pulls away from the areas with wax on and the wax itself vapourizes. The green halo suggest there's some copper in there as well. Nice find!!

Ah that makes sense.  The very soft edges to the thick white glaze made me wonder if there was some kind of resist going on.

It was a lovely thing - I was very sorry to see it go.

Vallauris is of course the place name.  It is a village in the South of France, that has a great tradition in ceramics.  So there are quite a few companies working down there. http://www.studiopottery.com/cgi-bin/mp.cgi?item=98

I can't see the base of your piece very clearly, so I can't make out who made it?

The company Picasso worked with was Madoura, but the marks don't look like theirs from this distance?
