Water jug
« on: February 19, 2008, 07:12:57 PM »
I bought this from a bric-a-brac market some 20 years ago as I like the shape of it. I was told it was Britannia silver, which I don't think it is. It could be Britannia metal (a pewter-type alloy) but I'm not sure. It polishes up beautifully. The marks on the bottom read GILBERT followed by a sort of leopard/alien head, a sideways female symbol, and the numbers 52 below them.

Any ideas as to how I can find out more about who made it, age, and what it really is made of please?
Cheers!

I wonder if it's anything to do with Gilbert Poillerat?

Crikey, TC, well found, thank you. :)  It says latter half of 19th century, which surprises me as I'd thought probably 1930s-ish.
Cheers!

I see what you mean as it's very Art deco but it could also be from the Arts and Crafts period c.1860 to 1910. It reminds me of some of Christopher Dresser's designs actually.

It's been put away on top of the cupboard again but it deserves a better place really... it's a nice piece for sure. :) I've never seen another like it though.
Cheers!

Interesting decoration, it looks as though it's been cut like glass? Or is it chased?

It was described as a water jug Rose, but I guess it might be used for either. :)
Cheers!

My little Pocket Antiques Fact File (Miller & Miller 1988) has this for Britannia metal

"This is a superior form of pewter evolved in the late C18 from plate pewter. Containing approx. 90%tin, 8%antimony and 2% copper, it was widely used in C19 for factory production of a wide range of items. Pieces were marked with names or trade marks on the underside. If the mark includes a pattern number, it is Britannia metal and not one of the earlier forms of pewter."

Just light reflections Keith, it's totally silver coloured, no brass at all. It's not like the Indian silver-plated brass stuff that was around a lot when I was small.
Cheers!

Spoon made by Joseph Gilbert (second) here:

Is it the same??

V&A - that is Victoria and Albert Museum.  That is a Top notch (World known) museum.  I had even contacted them about some stuff too (via the phone).

Is it the same Joseph Gilbert?  Maybe if it is - you should send them a e-mail too Anne, and see what they say...

Thanks Anne - If I can call from Canada to V&A about information, it is well worth the shot.  I was so honored they also wrote back to me, and sent me some info -- I even kept their envelope.

We collect anything -- don't we....  :24:
