Terms... Posy? Pansy? or Top Hat?
« on: March 21, 2008, 08:32:13 AM »
I was a bit of a gardener once and loved growing flowers. My mom told me of the special vases her mother used for flowers where the heads were heavier than the stems - which led me to collecting some flat shaped vases with big lips, which I have always called my flying saucers... but what's the correct term for these types of vase? I've seen them called Pansy vases, Posy vases and in the States where I have moved to, "Top Hat vases."

The best thing about these is that those who created these vases made sure the color of the glazes provided a brilliant backdrop for showing off bright orange nasturtiums and the white/mauve pansy flowers. Here's a Bretby navy blue one, a Poole Pottery turquoise one and a Burleigh blue.

Yep, posy vase - also made in glass - as discussed on the Glass Message Board at various times. All mine are glass not pottery so I can't add any more pics, but I can tell you that according to Chambers dictionary, an earlier spelling was poesy, ( :pst: which I personally think is nicer than posy. I always think of posy as being like someone who poses!  ;D)

yeah, very nice. I think I had something here to once that was referred to as a posy vase.  I forget the topic though....or where I posted.

I now just refer to them as posy too....do not know if corrrect, but that is what I call them.
Every flower that has ever bloomed, had to go through a whole lot of DIRT FIRST......:flowers2:

Yes Jayne, do join the GMB - I'm sure someone will be able to ID those for you - I think the pink one may be Davidson but I'm not sure. Someone will know though. Not sure of the other one but again I bet someone will recognise it. 8)
