Newbie Help Please - Arthur Wood
« on: May 30, 2008, 03:27:26 PM »
Hello,

I've just joined this site today and wondered if anyone could tell me what this item is. The stamp on the bottom says Arthur Woods, but I have no idea what it is, or when it was made, or if it is worth anything??
It looks to be handpainted.

Hopefully someone can give me a few clues!

Many Thanks

Debbie

Hi Debbie and welcome to the board.

Your piece is made by Arthur Wood & Son (Longport) Ltd, a manufacturer of earthenware at the Bradwell Works, Longport, Stoke-on-Trent.  The backstamp dates from the 1950s - shown as 1954+ on this backstamp page: http://www.thepotteries.org/mark/w/woodarthur.html

I can't see the top rim but I'm guessing it's a vase? If so it'll be what's called a fan vase. It looks to be hand-painted, the numbers on the base would be the pattern and paintress numbers I would think.

Value is pretty subjective and depends on the market place and how many people want it on the day, so not something I'd want to hazard a guess about. Hope this helps. :)
Cheers!

Depending on size, it could also be a serviette holder or if small a cigarette holder. Any of the three options would be appropriate for the period

Thank you Anne and Lustrousstone.
It is 14cm high so I guess its either a Vase or serviette holder.

Best Wishes

Debbie
