Help identifying "Western Germany" bowl.
« on: March 27, 2009, 06:00:59 PM »
Hi, Could anyone help with identifying this west Germany bowl? The bottom reads "Germany 65 9119" around edge and has a gold ink stamp in center that says "Western Germany". The foot ring show the unglazed pottery to be white. Any info. is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Hello there, I would say it was made by U or Uberlacker Keramick in the mid 1950's

The decoration is certainly late '40s / early '50s but the bowl was made using a pre-WWII mould, hence just 'Germany' is impressed. The stamp had to be added to show that it came from the Western Sector as at that time the East Germans were not only still seen as the 'baddies' from the war, but they were now Communists ( :hlp:) to boot,  and so their products were generally not welcomed throughout Western Europe and North America.
If you always expect the worst you'll never be disappointed.
