stoneware/earthenware??? what not, resembles bed warmer
« on: March 27, 2009, 07:15:03 PM »
hi
I have a earthenware/stoneware screw top thingy
it stands 10" high 4.25" across
it is glazed
one side of it is flat which made me think it was a bed warmer
no markings
the screw lid has a washer
any ideas :)
the first picture you can just see to the right where it is flat

It is indeed a stoneware bed-warmer. These were still in common use until around mid-way into the 20thC.
If you always expect the worst you'll never be disappointed.

It sure is, I have one here which for some reason best known only to the makers, has KITCHEN stamped under the glaze on the top!

Small versions of these were, so I was told, intended for use as muff-warmers for ladies when travelling in cold draughty coaches, they'd have one inside their muff to keep their hands warm on the journey, and a larger one on the floor which they could rest their feet on to keep those toasty too.
Cheers!
