Hard to read mark on lidded bowl
« on: August 18, 2009, 02:16:21 AM »
Help please!!! There is more of a mark than it first appears.
I've turned this in the light, different lights, in shadow and tried powders...for hours.
I keep seeing bits of the mark to the left but..... aarh :angry2:

It is nearly early all under thick glaze so no shadows from impression. Ive tried messing around with the colour it does reveal a little more. The mark not shown to the right is ENGLAND centre mark AS or SA monogram to the left P...I R...J I'm not at all sure of anything but the serif on the I or J .
I thought David Leach at first but it isn't any of his marks.
Any clues please let me know .
Many thanks
David

the decoration and glaze looks like early Dartngton pottery which was run by David Leach

Thank you,
I certainly can see a link to DL in this pot. I can't find any images of early Dartington though. Neither Lowerdown or Dartington use any similar marks.
I just had another look at Alex Sharp as a possible.... Still guessing though.
Can you make anything of the mark on the left?
David

I see what you mean by the similarituie to one of the Colin Kellam marks but the letters I can make out are different.

Trust me.....he has used all sorts of various second marks, your piece is classic earlyish CK domestic ware.

Thank you Martyn,
I trust you.... and see exactly what you mean.. many different marks with nothing to do with his initials.

They may be date marks? I'll ask a friend who knows him well tomorrow.

I'm reliably informed that most of the other marks represent various assistants who have worked with Colin over the years.

Thank you for all your work on this Martyn. I've now been able to clearly identify another piece of CK in my collection.
I'm about to add another favourite Ive been unable to identify. This has clear marks but in..roman, hebrew, celtic..script...looked at all but can't identify.
Thanks again . David
