It kind of reminds me of this....

...but that seems to be metal.

It has a pattern on it which looks a bit like roses or some sort of flower. Someones written a mark on it, XOAR, i don't think it has anything to do with who made it though.

Any ideas where it was made?

Probably not related,apart from a wood connection,I googled XOAR and it came up with a model propellor making company? ???

Lol, maybe someone had there little propellers in it.  ;D

I'm not sure what it's for but it's about the right size for holding playing cards.

Rose's 'tramp' art looks probable or maybe it was made from the centre cone of a large propellor??

I have no idea Keith. Not a bad idea though, i've seen things made from ship wood so why not Aeroplane propeller wood.

It says on Rose's link that the patterns are mainly geometric so i dunno really.

I'm just looking at the design of it. It's kind of pyramid shaped box with 8 groves running through the centre, then it has a sort of flower like pattern with tiny branches running around it. It looks to me as if it's Art Deco with maybe a little bit of Art Nouveau thrown in.

I did find this one which is Art Nouveau....

Silly, silly, silly guess here -- but could the wood be ROSEWOOD since it looks like some type of flower (? roses ?) on it...this is only a GUESS.

I see what TC mean being Art Deco, as I think I have seen furniture with that type of grooves with a strap (or band) or whatever you want to call it..
