Pamphonic 600V amplifier
« on: June 03, 2010, 09:45:56 PM »
This isn't mine, but I thought it's interesting enough to share. :) Whilst doing a clear out and risk assessments at the village hall we found this lurking in a cupboard. It turns out to be an amplifier from the late 1950s/early 1960s, which we think was probably used in the hall at the Saturday night dances. Pamphonic apparently started in the 1920s or 1930s and within a year of starting up were supplying sound systems to the top London theatres of the day. They later became part of PYE. This amp seems to weigh a ton!!!

More pics in the link here: http://www.burtonweb.org.uk/Pamphonic_amp/ - taken in the hall's lighting loft I might add (not my house!!!)  ;D

It's going to be listed on eBay soon to raise some pennies for hall funds to help with the renovation costs - every little helps!
Cheers!

Ooooh, would love to tinker with that, lol.

Showing my age here or possibly my lack of knowledge. I thought amplifiers were something to do with increasing electrical current. I take it that it's a radio?

I've seen that type of metal before, thermos flasks maybe, or was it on radios?

No, it's an amplifier of some sort TC...  no idea how it works though! The last one we saw sold on eBay went for ?134, dunno if this will do as well but anything will help boost the hall's coffers and pay for essential work.
Cheers!
