« on: June 28, 2013, 09:40:01 PM »
Posted this on another site in the hope someone might be able to help but nothing concrete as yet so yet another one for Keith lol.  Main image is darker than actual colour as I had to tweak the image

Hi Cookie,

Your elephant looks Thai to me rather than Chinese. I wouldn't know the age; elephant jars seem are a traditional design, but you can certainly find similar items brand new. Try googling 'Thai celadon' and see what you can find...

Regards,

Steven :)

Hate to disagree with you, but the form is certainly more Thai than Chinese, though Chinese repros exist. Here are a few other examples I've found on the net, though sadly none are an exact match to your example:

Here is a supposedly 16th century Thai example (again it should be noted that modern repros are available, some of which are made in China): http://www.icollector.com/A-Thai-Sawankhalok-Celadon-Elephant-Jar_i14537988

Modern Chinese repro: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Celadon-Crackle-Glazed-Ceramic-Elephant-Vase-/370616084090?pt=Candle_Holders_Accessories&hash=item564a70a67a

Some images of modern Thai production, not from good sources, true, but these kinds of things are seen in the markets in Thailand frequently:
http://www.allmyanmar.com/myanmarmore/Myanmar_Pottery.htm (scroll down to see a modern Thai celadon jar - like yours this has a flat base rather than separate feet)
http://www.thailandpicturevideo.com/ (other modern examples but again with a slightly different form).

yup I agree with you on that, the first two links are wrong as my piece has a flat base which is more apparent on the Thai :)
