Silver plated ruby glass vase
« on: September 14, 2011, 06:27:35 PM »
This belongs to a charity shop. They would like to know who it's made by and if it's valuable.

It looks as though it's been given as a present at some stage, it has "from phadke 24-12-40" scratched into the base. At least we can date it before 1940.  ;D

The makers mark looks like a boat with a letter "Y" on on the sail. I haven't been able to find who's mark it is. It has copper underneath the plating so i presume it's quite old.

That looks top quality TC.  Have you done a search for WMF or Liberty?  They did silver(& pewter) Art Nouveau and Arts & Crafts designs, and I'm guessing yours dates back to that period (although I can't distinguish between the two).    I've had a quick look in my Miller's Silver & Sheffield plate marks book, but can't find a mark that looks like a boat.

I tried WMF but not Liberty, usually those are marked L&Co, but i don't really know much about these things. I just can't think of any companies starting with 'Y', unless that's a date letter or something.

The name 'Phadke' is Indian or american, but i don't think that's where the vase came from.

Its worth trying on the GMB because lots of companies did overlay glass pieces and someone might recognise it.

I'm starting to think it's been a prize from a yacht club, could be wrong though.
