Wiltshaw & Robinson
« on: September 23, 2007, 10:40:57 PM »
I have a biscuit barrel that I believe was made by Wiltshaw & Robinson, pre- Carlton name change.  I have attached 3 pictures.

The lid also has WR stamped on the inside.  And the outer rim of the metal has some kind of lettering or mark.

I am afraid to even polish it for fear of taking away from the value.

Please take a look for me.  I was thinking of Ebaying it, but don?t have a clue as to a starting price or actual value.

Thank you for anything you can do for me.

I will do another post with more pictures, unfortunately my camera isn't the best.  I don't know how to add pictures to this post.  I guess I will get better at it.  I will describe the marks as best I can.

The lid unpictured has W S stamped into the medal near the center on the underside.  The brown numbers are 1006 with a T under it, The mark is crowned top with W & R inside just under the crown, also inside the mark bottom of ring it states STONE-ON-TRENT. Looks like a bird in the center of the mark.

Below the mark it states POPPY RD NO 157 (10?) On this part the D in RD is raised and half the size of the R with a underscore and the O in NO is the same half sized with an underscore.

If you can go to:  http://users.bigpond.net.au/mjp/dating_carlton_ware.htm

it looks just like the first picture of the mark with out the Carlton Ware and Made In England wording.

The marking on the rim is very, very hard to read.  It looks like there is like a shield with a crown and I think 2 letters under the crown inside the shield, the shield is laying on it's side at the end of the lettering. It looks like 4 letters the only one I can read is the 4th it is definately an S.  the 4 letters appear to be in old English style lettering.

Can't help with value as, er, admitedly, I haven't seen much Carlton Ware other than the recent stuff. :-[

Anyway, you probably know this already but, this is the 'Poppy' pattern, pattern number 1006 in Flow Blue.

This pattern number (1006) would "probably" date it before 1916.
See http://www.ckyk.com/carltonware/

Registrations numbers can help date when a particular pattern/shape was first patented.

See the table at the bottom of this page.
http://www.potterymarks.co.uk/reg_marks.html

If it has less than 6 numbers the pattern would date before 1889.

Well TC answered in full, he's very good you know!  :) the rim and lid are definatly E.P.N.S electro plated nickel silver and fits in with TC's dates.
