It's says Austria but think its British
« on: March 18, 2008, 08:41:41 AM »
Hi everyone,

This mark has me baffled. The D and B initials in an art nouveau typeface makes me think it has to be British especially with the lion rampant in the middle of the stars, and then the word Austria has completely thrown me... anyone have any clues to this?

Hi Welcome to the board.
I think you can be certain that your vase was made in Austria - that's impressed. The question is who does the lion and stars mark belong to? It could be the manufacturer or a wholesaler/importer or the retailer. I can see no reason to assume British

Great news!! Do you have a similar mark I could compare against by any chance so it can be confirmed? I'd thought the lion rampant with a crown on his head was symbolic of England, reminiscent from British heraldry thats all.

The other thing I don't understand, if it is made in Austria, why wouldn't it be marked it in native language "?sterreich" rather than an English translation?

It's a oddity. Egyptian handles mixed with a Bayeaux tapestry relief. Can you recognize the technique by any chance and attribute it to any Austrian potteries? I've exhausted the web without much success.

It.s a nice piece, but they named it Austria becose it was an export item. See the many german vases wich have 'made in germany' on them.

The lion rampant seems to crop up in heraldry all over the world. I don't have anything similar but Bas is right, goods for export are generally marked in the language of the importing country. It's the importing countries that often require the place of origin to be marked by law, so if stuff is only going internally it may not be marked. So you do have the place of origin, just not who

Perhaps the soldiers are invading Egypt, it happened many times

I wonder if this has anything to do with Howard Carter and the discovery of King Tut's tomb, could we see a pic of the handle and one of the front please.

Not sure they had lions in Ancient Egypt, Christine?   8:)

The chariot looks Roman rather than Egyptian I think... I've been looking for clues in the symbology of the images but not found anything yet. There's not much about Austrian pottery as such either (with marks anyhow) - just porcelain.
Cheers!
