A box of someone's memories
« on: August 05, 2008, 08:49:56 PM »
Rooting through a large carboard box full of junk at the carboot on Sunday, I spotted this little cross-stitch decorated box.  Anyway, to cut a long story short, the heavens opened, so I nabbed it quick along with an antique(y) lace scarf.  Paid my ?1 and ran for cover.

Imagine my surprise when I began to take a close look at it back home.  The box is decorated in tiny cross stitch in two shades of blue and has the initials K.S.A. on the top.  Inside, underneath a wad of tissue paper was an old looking head-dress.  Some flowers are made from fabric.  They've faded with age.  Other flower petals and buds are made from wax.  The leaves could be paper or fabric - difficult to tell.  These are all attached to a wire which fastens simply by hooking together.  I took it out carefully because it looked fragile and underneath was a letter - a handwritten one which reads as follows:

"This box was entirely made for me by my Grandmother (Black Granny what sits in a chair) for me.

Inside is my wedding head dress and bunch I wore at the waist, & enclosed is a bit of my Mother's which she wore at her wedding on Aug.22nd 1888. (she was only 18 and 5 days).

Black Granny (only so-called by you children because she always wore a black dress) made this box for me sitting in her window - the one nearest to the Ayston Rd. upstairs in what is now the Food & Council Offices when she lived with us there from 1917 - Easter 1919."

On the base of the hand-made box, in cross stitch, is the following text:

Box made for my Granddaughter Kathleen Adkins by me Catharine Forde 1918 aged 89

Its so sad that something so lovely should find its way in a box full of junk sold by a house clearance man at a carboot.  I keep thinking about Kathleen and Catharine.  Kathleen in her black dress - most probably a widow, and Catharine looking beautiful and wearing her headdress with pride.

What to do with it?  May be there are no descendants and that's why it ended up where it did.  Or may be nobody wanted to keep it in the family any longer.  There is an address on the letter, in Wadebridge, which is about 30 miles or so away.  It might be worth doing a little research to see if family members still live there.  May be there's a local museum there which would like it.  I know there's one in the next town from here with lots of artefacts found locally or donated by local people, but they are specific to that particular town.

Any suggestions?

I would check out the local history society and/or the family history society in the area. They might well know the family and, if not, would love the mystery and the solving of it.

I have lost way too many family memories (thanks to the step-mother, aka wicked witch of the west) to let another family possibly lose one of their's.

It's all beautiful, might be worth contacting Truro Museum. It also probably has resale value to wedding memorabilia collectors or textile collectors - it's got provenance after all

PS I think this thread should be moved to ephemera or miscellaneous

Thanks folks :)  I'll certainly make a few enquiries and will get back.  I didn't know that this sort of thing was collectable, so will check that out too, but my heart tells me that it should stay in the area it came from.  The black lace trimmed scarf is going to my daughter.  I'll post a pic. later for interest.  It reminds me of spotted net veils on hats that I remember seeing being worn by glam. film stars in old films.

Amendment:  I should have wrote - Catherine in her black dress and Kathleen in her wedding head dress, not the other way round doh!  I'm sure you spotted the mistake.  Thats what comes of posting late at night (well thats my excuse anyway) ;)

A good idea for this to be put in the appropriate thread :)

Super Find....

I would try to *just* find the people (relatives) to get some more history, but (I) would not want to part with it to the family....not to be mean or anything....it is just after finding it at a car boot, it has a new home where it WILL BE LOVED, and TREASURED NOW

<<<< Gee why did this not show up when I did a(my) preview of it...did it twice, and nothing showed up, so I hope the post is OK???? >>>>

But my point is...the family members that want it most may not have realized it was being tossed out at a carboot sale.

Good points Rose and Carolyn :)

I think I'm going to have to tread carefully what ever I decide to do.  The first thing I might do is try to locate the actual place where "Black Granny" stayed from 1917-1919, and see what cencus records bring up at the local library or where ever they may be kept for that particular area.  Oooer, sounds like a project coming on... :o

In the meantime, here's the vintage scarf that I mentioned...

Carolyn I'm having probs. previewing my posts before submitting them.  The text doesn't appear in the box and its just all blue ???  Just tried it now and its still happening.  All I can see are the three yellow smiley face emoticons.  I wasn't sure if I'd accidentally clicked on one of those little boxes above the emoticons or whether its something out of my control?  Hopefully t'other Anne will look in.

I think it must be nylon.  I don't think it can be anything else.  Its made up of tiny hexagons.  Very soft unlike the modern type that is stiff.  (I remember having 'sticky-out' underskirts when I was young - really uncomfortable to sit down in :o) The outside lacy bit looks as though its been added on to the edge, but in fact its machine embroidered to look like lace.  Its got a few tiny holes, but you've got to look really closely to see them.  The 'dots' are embroidered on too.

Glad its not me this time with the preview  ;D
Yep, still just a blue screen with just the emoticons showing... ???

Hmmm your messages seem to be doing well. I haven't been using the preview recently, so I have no idea what is going on. I will use it with this message to check it out.

Carolyn

The continuing saga...nope, works okay with me. It's just above the bar that says "Preview...memories".

Carolyn, the preview should work fine now as the problem was a security upgrade which broke the theme. This new theme is OK with the upgrade.
Cheers!

I've just been to the local library in town this morning to see if they could help in finding out a little more about it.

They've directed me to the Cornish Studies Library in nearby Redruth.  They provide all sorts of facilities including sessions on family history advice, and more importantly, censuses reports, old Parish Registers,  old newspapers and other records all on microfilm.  So that sounds like it could be useful place to visit.  They also have local history exhibitions, so that might be a nice place for it, so that other people can see it.

I'm not sure when I'll be able to visit, but hopefully soon.  Will wait for a boring rainy day ;D and will report back with anything I find out about Black Granny and her Granddaughter :)

I had a little mystery like this which drove me mad for months and months.  In a job lot at auction I found an entire womans memories - diaries, photos, telegraph book from the 1890s, letters, etc etc.  So many names, plus her OH was in the German air force - so I thought I would definately get somewhere with it.

After a long while of hunting I called it a day and sold the whole lot on.  TBH it made me feel so sad having it around, knowing that someone just cleared it out of this womans house and stuck it in auction.  Getting rid of it from my house gave me a massive feeling of relief from the 'responsibilty' of it all!

What a lovely little box that is, with a story attached that is all too familiar nowadays where there seems to be less and less room in peoples life for sentiment.
I would have a stab at finding the family but, if you have no luck then you can at least console yourself with the knowledge that this sort of folk art, especially with the provenance, appeals to a wide variety of collectors and can sometimes be quite valuable in it's own right, especially as it is obviously very well made and in such great condition. I could see this attracting a lot of attention in a good local saleroom.
If you always expect the worst you'll never be disappointed.

Hi Carolyn and CM.  I'm afraid I've not as yet been able to find out anything.  I did go to the local history section of the library quite some time back but drew a blank.  I don't think it was helped by me being absolutely hopeless trying to track down info on their computer data bases and they were too busy to help me at the time.

However, its spurred me on to have another go.  I think its been made easier quite recently to actually access cencus reports on the web, so I might be able to do it from here instead of visiting the library.   I will let you folks know if I am lucky enough to find anything out.

Best of luck Anne. Let me know if you need any good census sites for Great Britain.
