Hi, I was wondering IF this was older at all.  I can't find anything on it.  It does have a number of 5C-23 and just Japan.  So how does that work...some things marked:

JAPAN only, or
Made in JAPAN, or
OCCUPIED JAPAN...

Can anyone date this, or is it just new?  TIA

Anyone know a date by this mark?  Is this older or not since it is not marked MADE IN JAPAN.

I'm desperately trying to remember what little I know about Japanese modern history and so I may be a little off on dates here, but Japan first opened up to the outside world and began trading with Europe towards the end of the Victorian era, continuing until around WWI when it closed up again. Occupied Japan was immediately post WWII (as per Germany) and export pieces pieces were thus marked. 'Made in Japan' was 1950s onwards, so your plate is most likely early 20thC. The subject of the print is obviously not Japanese at all, but whether it was exported like this or added at a later date would need more investigation.

Thanks ChimpMad  -- So you think it is quite an early piece....as that is what I am trying to figure out.  I found nothing on the number either  ???  Be nice to get a date for the piece...

Personally I would say 1950s or 60s looking at the spray on gilding, the quality of the transfer and the fact that it has hanging holes

I tend to agree with Christine, that stylistically it looks 1950s+. This site http://www.gotheborg.com/marks/index_jap_marks.htm has a good load of info on Japanese markings and gives some dates for the different country marks as follows:

Unmarked or marked with Japanese characters = pre-1891
Nippon = 1891-1921
Japan = 1921-1941
Made in Japan = c.1941 onwards
"Pieces marked with JAPAN or MADE IN JAPAN in plain text without any company marks, in general date to the period immediately after the second WW. Some come with the addition of OCCUPIED JAPAN."

Thanks everyone for that great info.  I thought it was older, but maybe the 70's - so was not sure.  I had gone to that site of www.gotheborg.com as that is such a Super site, but sometimes I get confused trying to digest all the info there.  I sometimes talk  :mad: myself into thinking the wrong thing, that is why I rely on you guys here - you take a much more informative approach - and have so much more knowledge of things like this than me.

(Note:  But I have learned stuff here, as I saw an ad for BMP pottery, which I knew it was NOT - and I asked to see the base.  I recognized it ..... it was like that yellow basket I had ( http://www.yobunny.com/pottery/index.php?topic=10306.0 ) Ineke pottery.  I just thought I would add this here - as I AM LEARNING  ;D )

I must admit that my 1st thought was that it was an early 20thC plate with later print and gilding added, but after reading Lustrousstones' reply above I would concur that it is probably mid-20thC, particularly because of the hanging holes. Sorry if I misled you Rose, but I did say that my knowledge of Japan was sketchy at best.
I guess I should have listened to my mother when she told me "It's better to keep your mouth shut and let people think you're an idiot, than to open it and confirm the fact"!  :taped:

Yeah same here. :) My grandpa used to say, "there are no daft questions so never be afraid to ask" - something I've always adhered to. Pooling our knowledge can help build up a picture of something that on our own we'd not manage to figure out. We don't claim to be experts in anything here, we're just good at finding out things!  :beer:

Anne, as much as I hate to disagree I have to say that there really are such things as daft questions. My youngest daughter asked me tonight to settle an arguament between her and her boyfriend, and the question went as follows;
"Dad, I reckon that a fully grown lion weighs a little bit more than a big dog like an Alsation but Danny said that they're about 5 tons. Who's right?"
And to put this in context, my daughter  is an offfice manager for a large company.
