Topic: Poodle - Made in Japan

Hi I have this and I remember this from my childhood, so it must be at least 45+ years old.  I used to play with this.  There was a set, but not sure where the other one ended up ( ).  It is about 3 inches tall, and has like glazed pebbles on it, and also some sparkle dust type stuff on it.

 It needs a good cleaning, but I did not want to wash it in case it affected the stuff (sparkles, etc)  on it.  Years of dust, and from a smoking household (when smoking was the thing to do) so I think it is a bit yellowed as I had to lighten the pics a bit.  All I know is that I have seem this since I was knee-high to a grasshopper and I am getting 

Any other info.....all I know is that Poodles were popular years ago (1950's era) ??.  I am from the very early 1960's

I like it, I think i've seen them before on antique stalls. They sometimes have metal chains fastened to each other.

Super Links there TC...    Does kinda look like the Lefton one you posted (the bottom hole) as mine has the hole too....so I wonder (??)

I remember having these as well, with those little chains attached to a red fake leather collar.  The holes are common to many pieces as they let the steam out otherwise the pooch would explode in the kiln.

The poodles have noodles, lol. I mean they usually have a noodle type decoration, not sure what that type of decoration is on yours though.

It is like dripped clear resin, and then some sparkles on it.  I do not know how else to describe it.  I think Pic #2 shows them best...

I think Lefton were importers, as I had a glass vase with a Lefton label on once.
I just love the little pooooooodle.   They were very popular in the 50's and associated with Parisienne chic when they were considered fashion "accessories"  and carried by models and film stars etc.  They then started appearing on fabric prints and ceramics at the time, with Dior type figures.  There's a pic. of a 1950's Alfred Meakin saucer in one of my books showing stylised dressed poodles and other pooches.

Yep 50's I would say too.
Yep Lefton was an importer / wholesaler who imported a lot of glass and ceramics from Japan particularly.

If this had been glass then I would swear it's what's called "overshot". That is, pieces of glass about the size of grit, sprinkled over the item, when the glass (or glaze ? ) is still icky from the kiln and then sometimes re-fired ....sometimes not.

which was not re-fired and was very sharp !!

IF yours has been overshot then it was definitely re-fired as the shot is rounded, not sharp.

I will write that down, and see if I can get it from the library.  I always think it looks like *sugar crystals* on them glued on, but I know it is not.

I remember these from when I was a kid -- so I know they are old.  There was another one, but I do not know IF it got lost.

They are Cute !!!  ....and Again Welcome to the Board. 

I have been shoveling snow here, and still suppose to have another storm here....look forward to hearing/seeing any info or items that you have!!

I had a white china Mummy poodle with gold chains to two puppies and they had rabbit fur stuck to their heads for the poodle pom pom and on their bodies they stuck the fur there too. I had mine in the late 50's early 60's and I wish I still had it for it was  really cute .
