German? Silver? bowl
« on: April 11, 2010, 11:57:42 PM »
Just bought this thing for £4 on the car boot.  ;D

At first i thought it was silver plated but now i'm not sure since i found a mark on it. It has what looks like an 800 mark. It took me a while to find it, it's impressed in the middle bit on the front. It looks like 800, i'm not sure, there's a mark next to it on the right but it's too faint even with a magnifier.

The bowl is approx 15 inches long and weighs 550 grams.

I'd like to find another the same. It would help to know what the scene is first though. Maybe someone recognises it?

There's a man and woman and the man is playing the flute. The girl seems to be holding a large ring shaped object, maybe one of those flower rings things they put on top of their heads? They're lying next to four sheep, maybe he's a shepherd? Next to him is a hat and what looks like a stick or a rod with a small shovel on the end. Maybe he's been digging for treasure and found the girl, lol?

I didn't want to clean it in case it's really old.

I did find some similar ones but still not sure if solid silver...

I'd say it could well be silver TC: http://www.925-1000.com/Fgerman_marks_a1884.html - it'd be worth asking on the 925-1000 forums here:
http://www.925-1000.com/forum/index.php - fingers crossed for you!
Cheers!

Okey Dokey, i have posted on the forum. Cheers.  :x-fingers:

Cheers Keith, yes, it's annoying. On the other hand, i think perhaps if the mark had been readable i wouldn't be sitting here with it right now.  :24:

Also, they love to hide the marks in the strangest of places, same goes for EPNS.  :notme:

Lol, i posted it in the silverplate section, as it says in the forum rules that i have to post it in there if i'm not sure if it's silver.

Guess, what? Someone's just moved it over the the German silver section of the site. Well, that's a good sign, lol.  :x-fingers:
