Can you give us a picture of the underside of the seat as i know that helps in dating items.  (EG) Any screws, glue used, corner pieces used underneath, type of screws heads....etc.

If you can post some of these pic -- we can try.

Love it - Does look older.. :)

P.s,don't think the 'leatherette' seat is original, probably replaced a rush seat maybe?

I hate to do it -- but I wonder if (very carefully) a corner of the underside could be pulled back to show what is underneath.   I know, I would hate to do that too as right now everything is the way it is -- and even IF you did do this -- We might now be able to identify it anyways, so then a person would hate to do that.

Maybe try something like this here to SEE if they know more about just the style (etc) and the wood:

Worth a try there (no cost) and do keep us posted on what happens.  ;)

Nothing underneath, when I got it the seat was hanging off and all that's inside is something that looks like horsehair,I had to take the rusty old springs out as they were sticking out all over the place, rusty and very, very dangerous, not what one would want to sit on!

It puts me in mind of some of the chairs I saw at Blackwell, the Arts and Crafts House: http://www.blackwell.org.uk but other than that I can't offer any other ideas!  I did find a couple of chair history links which might be worth a looksee:

Thanks for the info',Arts and Crafts seem likely, the name Voysey keeps popping up with similar designs but can't find an index of his work,

Great site, thanks Anne, there are similarities but Voysey chairs have straight 'splats',think that's right, and his 'hearts' are all the right way up,maybe the designer of ours was very sad, lost love etc...and decided to put his upsidedown, will keep looking,ta,
