Old Art Pottery Vase with Interesting Glaze, Marked '72'
« on: July 21, 2010, 10:58:46 PM »
This one has me stumped... A lovely art pottery vase with a fantastic glaze; the basic colour seems to be a reddish brown with mottling, then there are iridescent lighter splashes which look variously blue and yellow. The whole surface has a fine crackle.

The base has an impressed number '72'. The seven looks English rather than continental in style. There appear to be three spur/ support marks just inside the footrim. The vase stands about 6 1/2 inches tall.

It has a bit of a Linthorpe feel, so I'm guessing maybe late 19th/ early 20th century. Can anyone suggset a possible maker?

Thanks,

Steven :)

The glaze reminds me of some Ruskin pieces I've seen,Keith.

pottery or red clay ??           like in Stoneware??                  or possible called earthenware??  Also, looks to me like a *sponge pattern* but just a wild guess.

Hi, I am also thinking it *might* be RAKU pottery......with the luster and the glaze

See Example of glaze:

just throwing that idea out....

About Raku pottery, to explain what it is:
