Oriental look heavy thick plate
« on: August 31, 2010, 07:36:00 PM »
Any ideas what this might be please?  Its a plate of some kind - may be an underplate.  Very thick and heavy with a pie-crust rim.  11" diameter and 1" at its highest, weighing over 1kg.  Masses of underglaze crazing.  No marks on the base, apart from a tiny purple squiggle which might be a Z or an L.

The decoration puzzles me.  The flowers are okay (I suppose), but then someone has added ugly splodges of blue, and gilt squiggles on top of that, only most of it is worn off.  One splodgy effort on the left looks like a basket, some kind of vase/urn thing in the middle and the rest, just gets worse.

I'm guessing it might be Chinese or Japanese with the chrysanthemum type flowers, but I'm no gardener so they could be anything ???  Is it a good 'un, or a dud 'un?  ;D

Cake plate perhaps? Or an underplate as you say Anne. It's a heck of a thing at that size for sure. The pattern looks vaguely familiar but I can't think why and that pie crust edge is just odd with that pattern.
Cheers!

It's probably an old Staffordshire teapot stand.

Well done TC   That looks about right.  Now that's what you call a teapot!  I'll google teapot stands and see what else comes up.
Nice to see you around  :kissy: :gcheer:

It's gonna be a mammoth teapot on an 11" stand! Maybe the one used below stairs to provide tea for all those the servants!!! :) I'm thinking how would they lift it too? It would have been immensely heavy...  I wonder if it might have been to stand a serving dish on instead, to protect the polished table from the heat?
Cheers!

Desparate Dan size I should think :24:
The decoration is a bit crude so may be for below stairs.  The only other thing I can think of is a toiletry set.  May be it had a water jug or a wash bowl on top.

Its a little bit similar to Mason's ironstone Japan design, but the decoration isn't as refined.  Definately ironstone though I think because of the weight, and also having to take the weight of something placed on top.

I haven't found a match yet, but came across this interesting website on Mason's ironstone reproduction fakes http://www.janicepaull.com/fakes/fakes.htm which doesn't help me, but might be of use.
