Topic: English China identification

Hi can anyone help. China tea cups etc with Imari style pattern. Back stamp is Fleur De Lys over a ribbon which says English China under that  number 5288 couple of gold spots and a green blob but no name!!!!...cannot upload pic as file too big.

I know this pattern but I can't think who made it! It's fairly commonly seen, and the squared-off plate makes me think it's probably pre-WW2 (late 1930s-ish). Let me sleep on it...

Thank you for the pics Anne...that makes things clearer for anyone looking...I saw the same pattern on the well known auction site yesterday and sent the vendor a question asking his opinion...he's just come back saying he thinks from my description that it may be Charles Waine & co..Derby Works Longton staffs...C1891 to 1913..as they did not use a makers mark for this pattern....what are your thoughts.....regards jojo

Hi Jojo, I checked in Godden and he gives various marks for Waine, all of which use either initials or their name... in the 1891-1913 period their pieces were marked with C.W. or a banner saying ENGLISH over the word CHINA (both in capitals) with a CW monogram in between. 

Can you get a clearer closeup of the mark itself please so we can make the detail out...  if you have a macro setting on the camera (usually a little flower symbol) try with that and see if you can get a better shot. Email it over to me and I'll add as before.

The Waine banner mark isn't like this at all...  I'll have a wade through Godden and see what else I can find later.

Barker Bros seems a likely possibility printed marks 1912-1930 and your tea-set would fit in with those dates,  hope this helps.

Barker Bros seems to have either Barker or Meir along with the mark though Robert...

I did finally find it on Replacements.com but sadly they don't know who the maker is either!

Hi Anne, would the mark on Jojo's pieces not be just a slight variation of the Barker Bros mark, just like the marks on the pieces from the link above shown as England, Also I've looked through my marks book and found no other factory using the fleur de lys mark that ties in with the dates of these pieces.... I may be wrong but i would still consider Barker Bros as the maker

Might not be there is the author didn't know about the mark or didn't know who it was for though Robert. There are a few marks that have similarities but I'd not be happy attributing this one for sure without more proof to be honest.
