Metal Bottle Opener....
« on: February 19, 2011, 05:09:57 AM »
I have a metal (old) bottle opener, but I have not taken any pics yet...but I can post the info that is on it, and can anyone help me.

It says on it:

CROWN OPENER
Pt #466444 (?Patent number ??)
Made in England
Reg # 811274

Can anyone help me date from that info?

I will get some pics done asap.  Thanks  :kissy: :kissy:

Keith's right, both the RD no. and the Patent No. date from 1936.

I found a mention of these here:
http://www.beercollections.com/Openers/Bottle-Openers.htm
Quote
The other quite common type of cast iron opener that you see has the numbers RD. 811274 on one side and PT. 466444,

There was also one on eBay recently which has the same numbers but was made for Mackesons beers: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MACKESON-BOTTLE-OPENER-VERY-OLD-/110643240865

The (UK) patent no. 466444 citation is as follows:

Quote
Abstract of GB 466444  (A)
466,444. Removing crown - corks. WILLETTS, C. T. May 12, 1936, No. 13389. [Class 125 (ii)] A flat prizing tool a, for removing crown-corks is formed oppositely to the prizing tongue d with one or more gripping teeth h, Fig. 4, f, g, Fig. 1, of the full thickness of the plate. The elongated hole e is of such size that the teeth impose a central pressure on the cap and the sides e<2>, e3 are lifted clear of the closure when in use.

If you go here:
http://v3.espacenet.com/publicationDetails/biblio?CC=GB&NR=466444A&KC=A&FT=D&date=19370528&DB=EPODOC&locale=en_V3 and look you will see the abstract, the drawings, and a copy of the original patent filed.  8)
Cheers!

Thanks all -- good Sites there with the Patent drawing etc, and I did not stop to think that it was Cast Iron either -- DOH  :hb:

Thanks all....looked around some more now and found some other sites selling them for $10.00 (Pounds) so the price varies it seems -- like anything.

What fun to find another version! I wonder how many different versions were made? Must have been a top seller in its day methinks.
Cheers!

These are still the best type bottle openers and have stood the test of time.
I can't be doing with all these new fangled fancy fiddly bottle openers.  Give me an old fashioned one any time ;)

Great to see another one!!!   See Keith, now you have the info/date for yours too.

Probably many still out there with different advertising on them but like Anne EB said -- "they have stood the test of time."   I bet there are lots of people that held on to them just like us.
