Coca Cola Porcelain Sign...
« on: August 30, 2011, 06:25:18 AM »
 Hi there:

Gotta have one of these on the board here..... :24:  Good old Coca Cola Sign.  Yes it is Porcelain, and does have some chips to it -- but then that only shows (confirms) it is Porcelain.  There are some scratches on the front (I was told kids had used it for a toboggan in the snow....LOL) but it still is readable.....and most importantly, it has NO bullets holes.  A lot of old signs were just shot at for something to do.

It is *huge*!!!

It is a bit bigger than 48 inches (or 4 feet) as you can see my hand in the pic.  It comes up to my chin.  I believe this is called a *Red Button* sign.....and from what I could find it looks like it might be from around 1953.  So old, and even with the damage to it -- I think it was a good deal.

You just do not find these everyday anymore -- and it is like over 60 years old.  I guess if someone wants a perfect one, they can find (and pay) for that.

I still like it the way it is....as it is SOOOOOO big, and I think that makes it more collectible.  It will not fit in my car, or even the trunk of my car.  Coke stuff is always collectible....

Eeeeek Rose that is huge!!! where are you going to put it???  Is it really porcelain? It looks to have a metal base, so might it be enamelled?
Cheers!

lol.......yes 4 feet across!!!!

I think it might be called Porcelain Enamel.....as see here:  http://www.answers.com/topic/vitreous-enamel  Scroll down to the definition.

I think it weighs about 40 or 50 pounds.  I am sure it is NOT some New type of Reproduction item for sure.

As Coke would say (their motto):  " It's the Real Thing! "

;D  I could not resist a deal.... :czy:

Found one in Millers Collectables 2003/4

Looks in perfect condition
1960's
14 inches diameter
?100-120

It appears slightly different: The word "drink" is larger on yours and it's in lower case. Yours doesn't have trademark underneath. I wonder if yours is older then?

 :24: and Yes, :sign_scare:

Oh, just noticed the size you gave, good grief that's a whopper!

:jaw_drop:    Yes, it is VERY Big.  Like I said 4 feet (or about 48 inches) as it is even a tiny bit bigger than that.  Sitting on the floor, it just about comes up to my *Chin*

......and I think the Size makes it a bit more rare (maybe), I hope  :sign_gj:

I will have to get a pic of a person standing next to it....as I think that would help a bit more -- but it is HUGE !!!!

We're going to have to put you on Canadian Pickers, Rose. What did you pay for it?

It would have to be porcelain enamel because I don't think anything that big that was just porcelain would have survived. Can you imagine the size of that kiln?
I would love to know how it was displayed originally. I don't think it would have been the corner market. I can't imagine they would have made very many of these.
Pretty funny that kids used it as a toboggan.

Rose, considering the extensive damage, I think much of the item's value is lost. On the Cola-Cola memorabilia site, I read that a tray in perfect condition can be worth $1000, whereas in poor condition, $1.

No I do not -- but I believe this to be from 1955 era, and that it was like a lollipop sign, one of each of these on a pole (from what I have found) so that is could be seen from both ways.

Since this is older, and only has scratches (no bullet holes....lol) from what I have found on the Net (and people/dealers) here .....anywhere from $800 to $1200+ as I was told that some people like the look of it (for the age) and that 4 feet wide is rare size.   It is also possible that some car wax and a polisher may take those scratches out -- but IF I did sell it -- I would leave that up to the buyer to decide how they wanted it done, fixed....or left as it is.  Seems the 4 foot one is rare...

With items like this 60 years old, you do not find Perfect.....and people love Collecting Coke items.

Thanks for the information. Are you going to keep it? I would probably leave it in the original state too. I have seen so many antique shows where people lowered the value of their items by fixing them up.
By the way, I was born in 1955 and I am not 60 years old yet! I know you were rounding, but it makes me feel old.

Agreed (not the old part -- Sorry) but leaving it the way it is.  It gives it Character, and IF I did sell it, and a person wanted to do something to it -- Well once it is out of my hands, I could not control that.

For now it is here, and will be kept as is....lol

I was just *rounding off* :sign_oops: the figure...... :sign_sorry: ...I know your only a Spring Chicken there, as I am too  :sign_thanks:

Hi there:

Took a closer look at it, and did find a Date ----> 1956 marked right on it, and a Canadian Model for Coke :cheerleader:

As for those prices, I see lots of smaller signs like this asking for lots -- and they are smaller.  IF I do decide to see it, I am sure I will make back more than 1.5 beans I paid for it.  As I thought that was a cheap price for it.

I also have a Coke Leather Jacket (real leather), a Stained Glass round Coke sign.....along with some Coke trays, Coke Cooler..... and lots of other coke collectibles here.

Not a zillion things....lol....but enough!!

 :24: :24:

Whoops forgot to show the pic of the date of the large Red Sign posted at the start -- So now added here, see last pic posted for the date of this big Coke Sign -- 1956

Are you telling me you found a 4ft wide coke sign for $150? Surely you jest. You must be the bargoon shopper of the year!

No jesting  ;D ;D --

that's what I paid, and the guy even delivered it for me too.  It would not fit in my car, or the trunk of my car as I never realized it was that big either.  I thought it would fit -- but NO way would it get into my car anyway at all.

I am a bargain Hunter     I jump on things I think are good deals!!

No jesting here !!  Honest!!  Swear on a Bible!!
