C E F C 1907, football pendant
« on: September 15, 2014, 05:48:47 PM »
Hallmarked silver 1907 Birmingham, weight 10 grams, 35mm high. On the front border it has A.H.F C. (Abbey Hey football cub, possibly) but on the gilt centre shield is stamped rather than engraved "C.E.F.C. 1907-1908" for which I can find nothing obvious to match.
On the rear is the name "B.P. Thomas." it is also stamped. Not stamped with letter punches but small dies requiring different shapes, some letters having many strikes to construct.
I presume is was either for a necklace of a lady or for watch fob of a man.
The front panel being either gilt but I suspect a solid gold shield fitted to a silver shield below as it is raised above the borders. So presumably for directors rather than players.

Interesting in addition to Hallmarks are makers mark W.J.D. and Rd 408273.

Any thoughts on purpose and who CEFC were? Is these a market for these?

Silversmith first, Frank:

W.J.D into an oblong chamfered rectangle
William James Dingley
Warstone Lane, Birmingham

The registered design no. is curious, as that number comes back from a Nat. Archive search as a textile design from a German company, dated 1883!

I can't find anything about the football connection or about BP Thomas, but I wonder if it could be a watch fob rather than a pendant ... a search on Google using the search term
silver watch fob William James Dingley brings back a lot of pictures of similar items.

Cheers!

It is a watch fob or people tend to describe them as fob medals.

The centre is gold. I would imagine it is definitely football related, but have not been able to find any more than yourself.

Seen one like this before only it was solid gold. I remember finding it hard to convince my boss that it was solid and not plated. Mainly because she took it to a jeweller and she thought it was plated. Think we sold it for about ?40 to a gold collector or dealer.

Ouch, 10 grams gold is more like 250 scrap! So someone got a bargain. As they are hallmarked it would have had the gold mark.

It was marked 9ct i think, can't remember, it was quite a few years ago. Certianly better than the ?2.00 the manager was going to put on it.  ;)
