Clarice Cliff
« on: December 31, 2007, 02:17:40 PM »
Clarice is the one thing that leaves me totally cold. I really don't understand why collectors will pay such huge sums for something so basic....

For the same price as a Bonjour teapot, just think what Poole you could get!!!

I was told some time ago that Clarice Cliff designs were originally meant to Make a load of seconds look bright and Jolly so they could be sold to the poor and depressed people of Britain in a time of hardship .Is this true?
I have never been a fan of C C,her work could not be compared with that of John Butler who worked in the factory at that time,a true ceramic design genius (in my humble opinion)

No, not to my taste either.... I think that CSA Poole for one is much much better quality than CC yet makes nowhere near the heights her collectors will pay...

There are some Clarice Cliff patterns I've seen which I like but most don't do much for me. These are useful sites for those who do like the designs: http://www.claricecliff.co.uk/ and http://www.claricecliff.com/

I much prefer her contemporaries:  Charlotte Rhead and Susie Cooper.
Cheers!

I just found a site with some CC patterns I've not seen before. They are not as garish as some of the others: http://www.sheryls-artdeco.co.uk/ceramics1.html I rather like the Mowcop tureen.
Cheers!

and there is absolutely NO WAY that they're gonna get ?145 for a Celtic Harvest bowl - they're worth about ?50 to ?75 absolute toppety tops!

all of the later Clarice stuff is overpriced on this site - in fact without wishing to denegrate the site at all - which is very good, attractive and well set out - I think all the prices are a little on the steep side.  But my mental price list tends to eBay prices, so I am out of touch with prices that pieces can reach in the normal retail trade.

I wasn't commenting on the prices as they weren't relevant to the topic really, but using the site as a source of pattern identification.  I think we all have our own views about pricing on sites and eBay etc. ;)

There is no doubt that Sheryl has some lovely things...

I'm only jealous really!

It is a good site for id, shame that there is no search function.
