A blackbird for Anne EB
« on: January 14, 2008, 09:56:20 PM »
OK so he isn't really black and he has pretensions to be a golden eagle. Have you got this one for your pie?

Awww he's a sweetypie ;D  I haven't seen one like him before.  Although I do have a couple who suffer from the same identity crisis sort of thingy  :pst: ;D

I'm sure this will horrify the purists (actually using the pie funnels that is, not my pastry - which I might add has improved a great deal since this pic. was taken ;)).

Today's pic.  http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y195/glassie/002-5.jpg
Something's been happening whilst I've not been looking.  There are now eleven :o

Well he said he quite fancied the idea of living in Cornwall, as it wasn't too far from his home county, so if you send me your address he's yours... ;D

They're lovely Anne....

I saw one today in a charity shop for a fiver - is that about right?

Would you actually cook a pie with an old one in, or add it afterwards?

He will be made very welcome down here Christine ;D  A big thank you 8)

Pip - you're spot on - Stavangerflint!  Just love their pieces with their retro pattern designs, but don't come across it very often.  This one's just for show.  I would never actually use it for anything.  I did have a jug once, with stylised fish/lemons on and got a really good price at the time for it.  Just wish I'd kept it.

Hi skay :)   They can go for as much as ?5 in charity shops, but look out for them at carboots where you can get them much cheaper with a bit of luck.  I've picked them up for as little as ?1.  However, I think there is one particular one that is supposed to be attributed to Clarice Cliffe  ??? that seems to get a good price on eBay, but I don't know if that attrib. is true or not.

I actually cooked the pie with them in :o ::).  But I wouldn't risk ever doing that again.  May be I'd add one afterwards just for effect.  I have got a bog-standard ceramic plain one somewhere, and would use that instead, but I don't think it's really necessary to use them (not with my baking anyway ::)   I did see an elephant one some time ago which was decorated to look like an Indian elephant.  Wish I'd bought it now just out of interest.

Thanks Pip - I'll put a sticker on the back so I'll remember :)

TC - I've just dashed downstairs and had a look underneath all the birds - I'VE GOT ONE MARKED NEWPORT!  Its the only one with a mark.  Some of the others have got a kind of squiggle.  Here it is...

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y195/glassie/Newportmark002.jpg

It doesn't look that much different from any of the others except for its eyes and painted feet, but there is a very faint number impressed on the front which would be too difficult to photograph - 809(?)1938.  (can't make out the 3rd digit properly)

OK, TC, spill the beans, what's so special about the Newport ones?
Cheers!

Great article, I'm almost hooked.

I think I'll get the one I saw, if its not damaged, and make a pie at the weekend!

I think I remember my Granny putting an egg cup in for the same reason, so I'll try that.

I'll report back

xx

Well according to the article LGF found, Anne's Newport bird is a 'CC' one. See caption for photo 4. Now he'll be getting ideas above his station. The number (reg. design mark) would appear to date his design to around 1935/6 according to this nice site TC found www.potterymarks.co.uk/reg_marks.html

Here he is - marked MIDWINTER ENGLAND

No damage but crazed - I reckon he's been cooked a few times.

Steak & Kidney pie at the weekend then but I won't cook him any further, I'll find something the same size.

I must not get any more of these.........

That's interesting Sue, as your Midwinter one looks the same as the Newport one above...?
Cheers!

Oooh it looks identical you are absolutely right!  ???  Mine's got a tiny glaze nick on the end of its beak, and I think I probably did it a little damage when I cooked the pie as there is very slight discolouration on the bottom edge.  That'll teach me!  Anyway, C.C. or not, I'm not parting with him.  An egg cup is a better alternative, but I just wonder if it will work the same because there isn't an actual funnel/hole to allow the steam to escape???

Haven't come across a flamingo yet, although my flock includes a duck and an albino blackbird! :24:  soon to be joined by Eddie the "Eagle" ;D

Yes, just the same even down to the little feet in the same place.  The eyes on mine don't look quite so tidy.  Maybe Midwinter copied it?

I think the egg cups my Granny used did have a hole in the bottom, but I've just looked at all mine and they don't - so they wouldn't work.
