Wade Whimsies
« on: January 17, 2008, 06:32:11 PM »
I think these are one of those things you love or hate!  I used to have loads in my youth, but they've all gone now. These were the last few I had...  is there a full listing of these anywhere?
Cheers!

Hi Anne,
This seems like a fairly comprehensive site. Values given too.

Great links, thanks all. (Have we got them in the board's Links collection or not? If not we could do with adding them.)  All my earlier ones went when I moved to London in '81, these last ones were the later ones which were given away with some cereal - cornflakes I think - sometime in the last 2 decades.
Cheers!

They were given away with Red Rose Tea in the US and Canada, but sold in little boxes or in crackers here in the UK (Tom Smith's Crackers.)  Some are still very valuable - particularly any of the Disney characters or Noddy set - Merlin as a Caterpillar is still making around the ?100 mark on eBay.

But the ordinary Whimsies are very cheap and common to find now, you will find them by the shed load at boot fairs - I sell them for ?1 a pop.

I have a load of the little houses up on eBay at present, have a look if you like - the Irish ones have just finished tonight.

Thanks for the memories, I worked for Wade's and me and Bill used to shovel pile after pile of raw electro-porcelain on to the pressing benches, for the pre-dominantly female (read: all-female pressers such as Bev Shufflebotham, to use) Piece-works rates in 79-80 were still set in fractions of farthings, and to this day, I wonder how those women managed to make any decent money. It was hard work, all manual pressing, and the ladies produced thousands per day. The pressing shop charge-hand and manager were both women, and Kath, (I forget her surname) the manageress, was like a Shakespearian Kate, from "Taming of the Shrew", red-headed, fiery, and no male manager from any department, addressed her with any term of endearment, she would and did not wear "duck" from anyone. Most bosses asked her permission, "Would it disturb you if....???
Glad those days have gone.........

Ok, before I start, this is a topic destined for the cafe! Your fault, Marcus.................."duck."
We used to go camping every year, flippin' 'eck, every weekend. One weekend, we met a couple, and their 2 sons, in Tenby, Wales. They both worked in the pottery industry, for Carlton Ware as it happens. Ray & Margaret Hawkins, if memory serves me well (I was only 14). They lived in Abbey Houlton and we often used to visit them......................They gave us loads of Walking Ware and Rouge Royal, some of which I still have!
Oh, those were the days....................  :taped:

I can remember getting them in christmas crackers. I had an alligator, which I kept for years and years, but it has vanished now they seem to be collectable.

I had a fish tank with Wade ornaments inside, I somehow managed to lose them all in our Garden pond. There's still one out there today but it's only half a sea horse.

I had a diver, lighthouse, two sea horses, a bridge, and maybe a snail too (or was that a real one?).

I've got two of these...

Pearly Queen...

...and a Disney cat, forgotton the name now.

I bought one of the first series whimsies, a beagle, it's not very common but it was badly chipped so I gave it to my Aunt. Otherwise I would have kept it.

Not all Wade Whimsies are marked, also, most, if not all of the first series Whimsies have a smooth base rather than a ridged one. Sometimes they don't have bases either.

I imagine, as the cat looks like the left-hand one, it's probably Si - the right hand one being Am??????????

They're worth a bob or two! Still laughing about the fish tank ending up in the garden pond! ;D

The aquarium set is quite desirable - you were missing the mermaid, and the shell is a whelk...

your Pearly Queen is VERY desirable still, and the puddy tat is Am (his mate is Si)

I never was good with lefts and rights. I'm from a seafaring family - I do port and starboard!

Is Disney only popular with the oldies now? and we're all dying off......... 8:)

So the cat's from Lady & the Tramp.

I probably had a mermaid, just forgot. This was more than 15 years ago, so I really didn't know what I had. Years after I lost them, I looked them up in the Wade book, hence why i've got big holes in my garden! ;D

Yeah, shame about the prices. I wouldn't mind a few Blow-Up Thumpers though.
