Soholm Oil burner with mark. Have you noticed the high prices of Soholm in Millers and yet when I look on ebay, almost zilch?

Soholm does seem to do poorly on eBay, but it does surprisingly well at antique fairs and in specialist mid-century design shops. I was at a fair yesterday, and a Noomi Backhausen floorvase with some damage sold quite quickly for just under ?100, and I know someone who regularly sells the large wall-plaques to a mid-century dealer in Nottingham for between ?90 -120 each - and they in turn must be selling them again for at least twice that.

I have one large and really abstract Soholm wall plaque by Noomi Backhausen that I really like. It's a really amazing piece with a thick glaze composed of coloured glass chips arranged in the various recesses and then fused. I'll try to get around to photographing it.

Ebay is a very specific market, some things do really badly there, some much better, as compared to b&m outlets of whatever sort.

I am not convinced yet that there is a reliable science in working out which is which....:(

Ta-da!

I've shown it to a collector of and dealer in Soholm pieces, and he says that it's a fairly rare piece and would have been incredibly expensive when new.

It looks a lot better in the flesh - the glazes are really unusual as the yellow is about 5mm deep, completely transparent and looks like shattered safety glass, and the red parts are full of dark striations that make it look very much like the piece is dotted with red-hot lava pits.

Unfortunately this doesn't translate too well in the camera.
