Studio pottery? vases x 2
« on: August 24, 2007, 10:10:29 AM »
Two vase (really weird shapes), obviously from the same maker and each have two impressed words underneath.
I don't have a clue as the words are illegible (to me anyhow).
Any ideas?

TIA

The other appears to read the other way up...The stamps are made up from metal printers type dies?

Up the other way the mark looks to start 'Toox??' ....to me at least ???

Could they be Greek letters?  Or maybe Chinese?  The word is saw as 'David' could begin with a Q when viewed upside-down  ???

I think the top word is probably the right way up and is maybe made up of 4 letters, but maybe it is upsidedown as well.... If the right way up the last letter may have an accent over it???.... but Greek is a good thought....I cant make any sense of either words in English.

Well, at least it is not my fading eyesight  :P I did think that the first word could be David. I have had them for about 10 years and every few weeks, I drag them out and try to read the signature again.....
I will look into the other suggestions too. Thanks, all of you.  :*:

The first word looks like KAVIO to me which means 'hoof' in Finnish and is also use to describe things in a hoof shape (ie with a pushed in middle bit ...think of the underside of a horses hoof) ....which would certainly seem to describe the first vase at least.
The 2nd word is upside down. all I an make out id TOOXO?

Oxo Tower is less than 2 miles from me. Its a warren of small and larger "galleries" which showcase work to the trade mainly it seems. I can't think why its name or a distorted form of it would be imprinted on these, but I guess anything is possible.

More on Oxo
I assume that there is a large gallery space higher up inside the building which I haven't been to and which gets used for shows of various sorts, not just pottery.

www.riddingspottery.co.uk
I thought that non of the links worked but the pics of pieces do and take you to more pics of their work. However I can't get any of the links on the left side to work (including the contact link) - can anyone else ?

Maybe he or AN Other potter marked pieces specifically for that or another show and it decodes as  "to Oxo" +? It still seems an odd thing to do !
